Hyundai Mobis unveiled a new technology that has the potential to revolutionize the production of electric vehicles. The Korean business unveiled its new 160-kW Power Electric system, which serves as the vehicle’s heart and lungs, on May 7. It integrates the gears, the motor, and the electrical control brain into a single box. This new design is intended for everyday automobiles.
The majority of people are familiar with Hyundai because of the vehicles they see on the road. But the division that manufactures the parts is called Hyundai Mobis, and in the past, it made parts precisely as Hyundai requested. They are now creating their own systems from the ground up. The ambition to provide a “one size fits most” solution for the worldwide market includes the new 160-kW unit. Because automakers can just plug this system in rather than creating a custom one for each model, it simplifies the process of constructing electric vehicles.
The 160-kW device delivers around 215 horsepower. For most people, that is plenty enough for driving to work or the shops. If a car producer wants additional power, they can install one unit at the front of the automobile and one in the back. This doubles the output to roughly 430 horsepower – enough to make any car seem very fast. Hyundai Mobis built this unique unit for mainstream EVs.
The corporation also made the new unit smaller. This new variant is around 20% less in volume than prior designs. It also produces 16% more electricity for every kilogram it weighs thus reducing space is a huge thing. When the motor and gears take up less room, engineers can use that spare space for other purposes. Maybe the car gets a bigger trunk, or perhaps passengers get additional legroom.
A whole line of these drive units is being developed by Hyundai Mobis. A 250-kW variant for high-performance electric vehicles was previously completed last year. They are focusing on the future now that the 160-kW version is prepared. They intend to complete a smaller 120-kW version by the first half of 2026. This small component will be used in small cars or automobiles marketed in developing nations where consumers are looking for reasonably priced solutions. The business will have a motor for nearly every kind of vehicle on the road by the middle of 2026.
Here, efficiency is the key to success. The developers concentrated on creating modular pieces, which employ the same fundamental ideas for numerous systems. The power modules that manage the electricity and the motor components were standardized. This is similar to building a large truck or a small automobile out of the same LEGO bricks. Because they don’t need to create a new “brick” each time they want to build anything new, it saves the business time and money.
Some might wonder why Hyundai Mobis is doing this given Hyundai Motor Group already builds its own fast motors. The parent firm manufactures high-end tech for automobiles like the IONIQ 5 N and those parts are incredibly pricey. Hyundai Mobis is choosing a different approach. They seek to market their solutions to many different vehicle makers all around the world. They are working on developing products that are reliable, easy to make in huge quantities, and affordable to produce. It is a classic division of labor. One group manufactures the luxury things, while the other makes the items that everyone can buy.
In 2023, Hyundai Mobis secured a “green loan” for €802 million. This money helps them develop plants in North America for batteries and the new drive systems. In total, they expect to invest €1.11 billion on EVs through the year 2030. They are wagering big that more people would want to drive automobiles that do not consume gas. Several car makers from other nations have already showed interest in buying these new units.
The shift toward these universal systems reveals that the world of electric cars is growing up. We are moving away from custom-made, pricey parts toward parts that function in many various automobiles. This helps down the price of EVs for everyone. When a manufacturer can build thousands of the same motor instead of hundreds of different ones, everyone wins. Hyundai Mobis is positioning itself to be the go-to shop for any firm that wants to produce a terrific electric vehicle without starting from scratch.
